National Level Smart School IoT Hackathon 2020, organised by Digital Internet Malaysia (iaM) was held virtually on 5th November 2020 in conjunction with Minggu Sains Negara (‘National Science Week’) Programme by the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI).

Minggu Sains Negara is one of the initiatives implemented annually by MOSTI to create a platform to invigorate and cultivate science, technology and innovation (STI) amongst the general public. It is streamlined with different approaches to reflect the inclusion of scientific and technological advances that are dynamic and in line with current technological advancements and developments. This year’s theme is “Miracle of Science.”

National Level Smart School IoT Hackathon 2020 provided an opportunity for students to learn and gain exposure on the Internet of Things, entrepreneurship, Arduino, technical skills and most importantly the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

“It is vital to develop a creative, innovative and entrepreneurial mindset in youth to build resilient future startup talents and at the same time increase the STEM adoption rate in schools. We are happy to continue supporting the Smart School IoT Hackathon,” said Dzuleira Abu Bakar, MaGIC CEO.

The same sentiment was echoed by Datu Wira Dr Rais Hussin, Chairman of MDEC who is a staunch supporter of innovation ecosystem development, especially amongst the youth.

A total of 203 teams (about 1200 participants) registered nationwide and expressed their interest through online idea submission. Only 75 teams (300 participants) qualified for the next level of virtual competition. The successful team members/students were trained on the Internet of Things (IoT) and Entrepreneurship for 3 days.

The hackathon themes were Smart City, Smart Tourism and Smart Agriculture. All the teams went through the challenges in building their prototype, cracking the code and making final preps to pitch their solution.  School teachers played a strong role in becoming mentors and guiding students in building their prototype. The current COVID19 & CMCO situation added more fuel to the challenge.

iaM Chairman, K Nantha mentioned that STEM is the key to our future success & opportunities should be given to our young generation to express their potential. Thus, Smart School IoT Hackathon – National 2020 is an ideal STEM platform for students to showcase their IR4.0 innovations.

In the finals, teams “Among us” from SMK DPHA Gapor and “Musang King” from SMK Batu Lintang from Sarawak state emerged as the top scorers. They were crowned as the Champion and 1st runner up respectively whilst team “Coders 32” from SMK Kota Kemuning, Selangor secured the third place. The judges were impressed with the students’ ideas, creativity and their abilities to articulate their ideas in well structure presentations.
