Smart School IoT Hackathon For Selangor State Level

Students were given the opportunity to showcase their talents in the very first Hackathon

Where are we today? Anyone want to answer that? No? Okay, let us shed some light. Today, we are living in an era where technology is always evolving and admit it, the popularity of Internet of Things (IoT) is sure growing – and growing tremendously at that! With companies trying to integrate IoT devices in their network infrastructures and finding ways to utilise them efficiently, this has become their priority to improve the system’s efficiency and production timing, to increase the quality of service and to ensure optimum use of resources available – all for our benefit and a good return of investment for their part of course, if we might add.

Now, when we talk about IoT, it is becoming a norm for young entrepreneurs and startups to get the golden ticket to pitch their ideas and/or solution to attract the big fish and where would be the best place to do so if not at various events organised specifically for this opportunity! But somehow there is somewhat a “negative” stigma that these opportunities are limited to only startups and entrepreneurs. Yeah, well… you might want to rethink peeps.

Thanks to the Internet, we have access to everything and anything. Thanks to the Internet, we can expose ourselves to learn new things. Thanks to the Internet, anyone with a strong observation skills, IoT and a problem solving mind can develop their very own IoT solution and thanks to the Internet, we have Digital Internet Malaysia (iaM).

So, what is iaM? Well, for starters, they are an NGO that focuses on creating awareness, foster capabilities and share the benefits of digital & Internet technology that covers the aspect of Internet, Internet of Things, Big Data and Cyber Security but you know what makes them cool? They believe that secondary school students are capable of building their own IoT devices and the golden opportunity to pitch ideas should not be only limited to entrepreneurs and startups. They are as cool as it gets because they too organised the Smart School IoT Hackathon, the first ever Hackathon in Malaysia for secondary school students!

As Malaysians, we have no doubt that some might ask why such a competition is organised – let’s just say the students were given the opportunity to showcase their talents while educating them with IR4.0 skills, thus, enhancing their problem solving skills as a whole. Don’t be surprised that many agencies are showing their support in this competition. To name a few, they are Selangor State Government, Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE), CyberSecurity Malaysia, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC), Nottingham University, HeiTech Padu Berhad and Cyberview Malaysia. Hey, don’t forget about strong support from teachers, PIBG and parents and not to mention, the launching ceremony of the programme was officiated by our very own Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Yang Berhormat Tuan Gobind Singh Deo. Awesome, ain’t it?

And that’s not all! With the students armed with IR4.0 skills, they were given a hardware to build solutions based on the following theme: Safety, Transportation, Environment, Health, Cost of living and Education and when we say they never failed to impress everyone present with their solutions, you better believe it.

The featured categories of this competition introduced by Digital Internet Malaysia were:

  • Best Solution in which the students need to explore and develop their problem solving skills, focusing on the devices and solutions.
  • Best Showcase where the students enhance their marketing skills.

Out of 32 schools, eight [8] teams came out top and were selected to pitch their ideas and three [3] winners were selected for each category. Winners were presented with their awards by Yang Berhormat Ganabatirau, ADUN for Kota Kemuning. Kudos!
