There are three ways you can find keywords: 

  • Enter a keyword or a phrase in the keyword tool that you are using. The tool will in return suggest to you other related keywords. You can compile these keywords together in one list and refer to them when you are strategizing your blog posts. 
  • The second approach is to enter the URL of a specific website and find out the keywords and phrases that the website ranks for. You can opt for this approach if you want to write a post for that specific website. 
  • Use the filter option to search for only question keywords. These are mostly long-tail keywords that are formatted as questions. When you incorporate both short keywords, long-tail keywords and question keywords, the rank for your website gets higher. 

How to pick the right keywords for your blog? 

If you think you have to use all the keywords you found in the keyword research tool, then you are mistaken. Using all the keywords in your blog will create keyword stuffing, which is not a good strategy at all in 2021. 

Keyword stuffing used to work a few years back, but the content hence produced was almost unreadable and made absolutely no sense at all. 

Choose keywords with low difficulty store 

When you use a keyword research tool, you will notice that there are scores on the side, difficulty scores. These scores are determined based on the number 1 ranking pages that have made use of the said keyword. 

You need to choose keywords that have an average to lower difficulty score if you are new to blogging, but if you already have some experience with blogging and have a fair idea of how keywords work, you can choose to include high difficulty score keywords in your content. 

Consider your target audience when choosing the keywords

Experienced bloggers have a very good understanding of their target audience. They tend to create audience personas, which includes audience profiles. This knowledge helps them to pick out keywords which their target audience is likely to use when searching for it on the internet. 

Do not just pick keywords from the list which seems related to the topic you picked, but instead look for keywords that your audience is likely to use. Create content with these keywords and you will see the engagement meter going up. 

Consider the search volume for the keywords 

Search volume refers to the number of people that are searching using that specific keyword. Your first thought would be to use the keyword with the highest number of search volume because that means more traffic but you also need to consider your voice and your audience for that. 

We recommend you to use a keyword that has a moderate search volume to rank higher on the Google SERPs. Ranking high on the SERPs will generate enough traffic. 

Keyword research takes time and a lot of patience. It also takes a lot of practice and understanding on your part, on how keywords work. Once you understand the concept, it will not be too difficult for you to come to use keywords in your blogging strategy.
